Im Jahr 1455 unternahm der sächsische Edelmann Kunrâdt von Kauffungen ein gewagtes Unternehmen, um seine Forderungen nach Kriegsentschädigung an seinen Dienstherrn, Kurfürst Friedrich II, Herzog von Sachsen, Markgraf von Mei en, durchzusetzen. Er entführte die beiden Söhne des Herzogs aus dem Residenzschloss in Altenburg. Kauffungen und seine Helfer wurden auf der Flucht nach Böhmen gefangengenommen und die Prinzen befreit. Danach wurde er in Freiberg in Sachsen enthauptet. Alljährlich im Juli wird an dieses Ereignis in Altenburg (heute in Thüringen) durch Festspiele im Freien erinnert. Der britische Autor, Austen Moray, hat mit dieser auf Deutsch verfassten Tragikomödie nicht nur Kunrâdt von Kauffungen sondern auch Sachsen und Thüringen ein Denkmal in dramatischer Form nach Vorbild der deutschen Klassik gesetzt. Auch Gera, Zwickau, Freiberg und Weimar werden erwähnt und das jährliche Kirschfest in Naumburg besungen.
