The way the Federal Republic of Germany dealt with its colonial past has undergone a profound transformation. It has shifted from a nostalgic perspective, mainly shaped by former colonial actors, to a more critical and reflective view, supported by an increasingly broad public. Katharina Bocker follows these developments with a focus on memory culture as well as politics of memory from the 1950s to the 1990s, analyzing the dominant narratives and key actors. It also includes the former most important German overseas territory - today's Namibia. This reveals cultural and historical-political interdependencies and mutual influences between the two states.
