Intermediaries, Democracy and Competition. Risks of Information Intermediaries for Democratic Opinion-Forming Processes and Capabilities of Antitrust Law to Reduce those Risks The thesis first examines the extent to which the concrete impact of intermediaries on democratic opinion-formation processes gives rise to a fundamental-rights-based obligation to safeguard the functionality of such processes. Subsequently, the thesis addresses the question of the extent to which the protection of functioning competition under antitrust law can make a supplementary contribution to fulfilling that fundamental-rights-based obligation.
