Die Chinarinde, die zur Herstellung von Chinin verwendet wird, wurde in Europa importiert und war aufgrund von Handelsbeschr�����nkungen und Kriegen oft schwer zu bekommen. Aus diesem Grund wurden in Europa alternative Pflanzen gesucht, die �����hnliche Wirkstoffe enthalten. Renard untersucht in diesem Buch verschiedene einheimische Pflanzen wie die Weidenrinde und die Gelbholzrinde und vergleicht ihre Wirkstoffe mit der Chinarinde. Dabei geht er auch auf die Geschichte der Chinin-Gewinnung ein und beschreibt die chemischen Prozesse bei der Extraktion des Wirkstoffs. Das Buch ist ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Geschichte der Medizin und Pharmakologie im 19.
