The iconic design classics that are still handcrafted today by the
Auböck workshop, now in its fourth generation in Vienna, were ahead of
their time from the very beginning and shaped Austrian design across
generations.
The book and exhibition focus on the style-defining
experimental 1980s. The works are viewed through the lens of surrealism.
For the first time, works by the sculptor and textile artist Mara
Uckunowa-Auböck (1895-1987), who met Carl Auböck II (1900-1957) at the
Bauhaus in Weimar, are also presented.
The book contains, among
other things, newly produced photographs of the essential, original
works shown in the exhibition, as well as a foreword by Lilli Hollein,
texts by Kimberly Bradley on the workshop in the international design
context, Nina Schedlmayer on the history of the workshop and Bärbel
Vischer on the surrealist perspective on the comprehensive oeuvre of the
Auböck workshop.

Die ikonischen, bis heute handgefertigten Designklassiker der in vierter Generation in Wien geführten Werkstätte Auböck waren von Anfang an ihrer Zeit voraus und prägten österreichisches Design generationenübergreifend.
Buch und Ausstellung konzentrieren sich auf die stilprägende Ära der Zwischen- und Nachkriegszeit und verweisen ebenso auf die experimentellen 1980er Jahre. Dabei werden die Werke durch die Linse des Surrealismus betrachtet. Erstmals werden auch Arbeiten der Bildhauerin und Textilkünstlerin Mara Uckunowa-Auböck (1895-1987) präsentiert, die Carl Auböck II (1900-1957) am Bauhaus in Weimar kennenlernte.
Das Buch enthält unter anderem neu angefertigte Fotos der wesentlichen, originalen Werke, die in der Ausstellung gezeigt werden, sowie ein Vorwort von Lilli Hollein, Texte von Kimberly Bradley über die Werkstätte im internationalen Design-Kontext, Nina Schedlmayer zur Geschichte der Werkstätte und Bärbel Vischer über die surrealistische Perspektive auf das umfassende OEuvre der Werkstätte Auböck.
