Das Buch Grundbegriffe der Linearen Algebra basiert auf den Erfahrungen, die die Autoren über eine längere Zeit bei der Anfängervorlesung Lineare Algebra gemacht haben. Es wird versucht, die Studierenden auf dem Kenntnisstand der Schule abzuholen und behutsam an das Niveau der Hochschullehre heranzuführen. Besonders wichtig ist den Autoren eine möglichst hohe Anschaulichkeit, insbesondere durch geschickt gewählte Beispiele. Eine sehr hohe Ausführlichkeit bei den Aussagen und Beweisen soll bei den Studierenden die Kompetenz zur selbstständigen Beweisführung stärken. Das Buch geht in hohem Ma e auf die Schwierigkeiten ein, die Studierende im ersten Semester eines Mathematikstudiums gemä den Erfahrungen der Autoren haben. Alle Kapitel sind deshalb auch mit sorgfältig gewählten Übungsaufgaben versehen.
Inhaltlich präsentiert das Buch die wichtigsten algebraischen Grundstrukturen (Menge, Gruppe, Ring) und die zentralen Gegenstände der Linearen Algebra (Vektorraum, lineare Abbildung, Matrix, Determinante). Den Abschluss bilden Eigenwerttheorie, Diagonalisierbarkeit und der Satz von Cayley-Hamilton. Auf metrische Probleme geht das Buch nicht ein. Diese sind in der Regel nicht mehr Gegenstand der Linearen Algebra des ersten Semesters.
