Quelle des anonymen Originals der Geschichte von Ming-Y ist die beruhmte chinesische Sammlung Kin-Kou-Ki-Koan (Wunderbare Ereignisse der alten und der neueren Zeit) aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Der amerikanische Dichter Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) ubertrug das chinesische Original in freier Weise ins Englische. Hearn war Sohn eines irischen Vaters und einer griechischen Mutter, wurde auf einer ionischen Insel geboren und hauptsachlich in Frankreich und England erzogen. Nach spaterem Aufenthalt in den USA ging er nach Japan und nahm die Staatsburgerschaft dieses Landes an. So wurde Japan seine Wahlheimat. Bewusste Aufgabe westlicher Lebensart auf der einen Seite, genaue Kenntnis des Chinesischen und des Japanischen auf der anderen, der Umstand, dass er seine Werke auch nach seiner Ubersiedlung in den Fernen Osten in Englisch schrieb - all dies gab ihm den besonderen Rang eines Mittlers zwischen fernostlicher und abendlandischer Lebensart.
