This is a commemorative speech delivered by Victor F. Petri on February 15th, honoring the life and work of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. The speech, titled Gedächtnisrede zur Todtenfeier Lessings am 15. Februar, serves as both an obituary and a critical appraisal of Lessing's contributions to German literature and thought. It offers insights into Lessing's impact on his contemporaries and his enduring legacy as a playwright, philosopher, and literary critic. Petri's address provides a valuable historical perspective on the reception of Lessing's work and the significance of his ideas in the context of 18th-century Germany.
