Das Buch zeigt, dass Irlmaier kein Kalenderprophet war, sondern mit Zuständen, Zeitmarkern und Bildern arbeitete: Hochsommer statt Jahreszahl, Mondlängen statt Wochen, Reife statt Datum. Aus diesen Markern lässt sich kein Schicksal ableiten - aber ein Zeitfenster.
Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der berühmten Aussage von den zwei Achtern und einem Neuner sowie auf der zeitlichen Abfolge von Eskalation, Wendepunkt und abruptem Ende. Diese Aussagen werden nicht mystifiziert, sondern nüchtern eingeordnet und in einen realistischen geopolitischen Zusammenhang gestellt.
