Agnes Bernauerinn: Ein Vaterländisches Trauerspiel by Josef August von Törring, is a classic German tragedy based on the true story of Agnes Bernauer, a commoner who married Albert III, Duke of Bavaria, in the 15th century. Her marriage was opposed by Albert's father, Duke Ernest, who considered it unsuitable and a threat to the duchy's stability. Agnes was eventually accused of witchcraft and drowned in the Danube River in 1435.
Törring's play explores themes of love, duty, and political intrigue, set against the backdrop of medieval Bavaria. It presents a dramatic account of Agnes's tragic fate and the consequences of defying social and political norms. This historical drama offers a compelling portrayal of a woman caught between love and power, making it a significant work of German literature.
