Die historische Adelsforschung hat sich in den letzten Jahren als ein besonders produktives geschichtswissenschaftliches Forschungsfeld etabliert, das transnationale Perspektiven eröffnet und eine Fülle von interdisziplinären Anknüpfungspunkten bietet. Eine Zeitgeschichte des historischen Adels in Europa steckt dagegen noch in den Kinderschuhen. Besonders der Raum jenseits der Oder galt lange Zeit als eine adelsgeschichtliche tabula rasa. Dass dem nicht so ist, zeigt die vorliegende Studie, die Geschichte und Gedächtnis des vertriebenen und geflohenen Adels nach 1945, aber auch die Geschichte der für die familiale Traditionsbildung so wichtigen Orte im kommunistischen Polen in den Blick nimmt.
Sie schreibt einerseits eine Alltagsgeschichte adeliger Identitäten und adeliger Sozialisation in der Bundesrepublik und fragt danach, wie sich Menschen in verschiedenen Lebensaltern, Generationen und sozialen Einbettungen ihrer selbst bewusst werden, welche Bezüge sie zu ihrer Herkunft und der weiteren Herkunft ihrer Familie haben, wie Erinnerung in Familien weitergegeben und geformt wird und wie sie zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts ihre individuelle Erfahrung als Geschichte deuten.
Diese Perspektive verbindet sich mit ausgewählten Beispielen des Umgangs mit den materialen Überresten der Adelskultur im kommunistischen Polen. Denn wo der Adel wich, blieben Räume und Artefakte, die in einer ihrem Selbstverständnis nach neuen Gesellschaft der Deutung bedurften - zumal, wenn diese Gesellschaften wie jene Mittel- und Osteuropas in der stalinistischen Phase so sehr auf Sichtbarkeit und Eindeutigkeit der öffentlichen Realität abgestellt waren.
Im Spannungsbogen zwischen der Erzähl- und Erinnerungsgemeinschaft eines Adels ohne Land und der Geschichtspolitik eines Lands ohne Adel nähert sich die Studie behutsam einem erinnerungspolitisch sensiblen Thema und füllt zugleich ein wichtiges Desiderat der zeitgeschichtlichen Adelsforschung.
