In the face of rapid changes in today's world, science and technology directly influence socio-political-economic development, education and the well-being of societies. It is up to schools to include citizens in this modern world through scientific and technological literacy, which is understood here as the main objective of science education. This research investigated how teaching related to genetically modified foods occurs in the classroom in secondary education by natural science teachers and whether they meet the teaching needs in the schools investigated. It is important to reveal the research scenario, which took place in the Amazon Region, in the far north of Brazil. Here, we point out the need for research in science education to be expanded in the region in question, especially in the state of Amapá, which hosted the development of such activities.
