The generational shift from the Baby Boomers to the Zoomers, often known as Generation Z, has had far-reaching effects on how we connect with one another and how we get around in the world. The smartphone's pervasive impact on the millennial generation is a defining feature of this shift. The generations of people known as Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) remember a time when rotary phones and handwritten letters were commonplace. In contrast, the Zoomer generation (those born between the mid-1990s and the present) has grown up with texting, Facebook, and smartphones. The generation gap is exacerbated by differences in how people of different ages use and view technology.
The identity, behaviors, and communication patterns of the Zoomer generation have been molded by the rapid evolution and acceptance of the smartphone. This article looks at how the smartphone has played a role in the generational shift from the Baby Boomers to the Zoomers, and how it has become an indispensable tool for the latter group. The smartphone has had a profound impact on every aspect of the lives of the Baby Boomer generation, from social interactions to the acquisition of knowledge to the pursuit of entertainment and the handling of the difficulties of modern life.
One of the most obvious and major ways in which the smartphone has altered the lives of Baby Boomers is in the realm of social connectivity. The majority of Baby Boomers' social interactions were conducted in person, via the telephone, or by handwritten correspondence. Zoomers, on the other hand, can reach out to loved ones anywhere in the world using any of a number of available social media sites or messaging apps. The smartphone has allowed Zoomers to keep in touch with one another, share stories and experiences, and get real-time updates on one other's life.
