Colorful characters of the times, such as Colonel Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox), Benjamin Talmadge (head of Gen. Washington's spy network), Gen. Casimir Pulaski (charismatic Polish leader who saved Washington's life), and Admiral d'Estang (French Commander at the Battle of Savannah), fought together to defeat the world's strongest military power of their time. They risked their lives, their families, and their wealth to fight for an ideal: the American ideal of freedom.
General Lachlan McIntosh killed Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, in a duel in 1777. He was almost hanged for that act and became infamous for it. But he also served with General George Washington at Valley Forge, built forts along the Western Frontier, drove the British out of Georgia, and fought at the battles of Savannah and Charles Town (today's Charleston). He was captured and survived an inhumane British prison for almost two years. He had more to lose than most Patriots. He risked it all, and he lost it all-except for his faith, family, and the country he loved. The price he paid helped secure America's freedom.
Scottish myths and legends, Appalachian folklore, Native American traditions and histories, and an enduring love story make for an interesting read. Fictional characters who add color, humor, insight, and intrigue to the historical events make it an enjoyable read as well.
