The Star Trek franchise has historically resonated with queer audiences through its depictions of loneliness, homoerotic overtones, and longstanding same-sex friendships. In a radical and controversial change, however, Star Trek: Discovery became the first Star Trek series to feature gay, trans, and non-binary characters.
This book explores the ways in which Star Trek has consistently provided a space where difficult questions about gender and sexuality can be raised. Expanding from the first edition's exploration of allegorical and thematic queerness in Star Trek, this second edition addresses the implications of the new era that now includes explicit depictions of queer and trans identities. Tracing queer themes from the original 1960s series to J.J. Abrams's Kelvinverse films, this book argues that Star Trek continues to speak to queer audiences through subtle yet provocative allegorical narratives even in the era of explicit representation.
