The Gate Was Open is a novel inspired by the real history and local legends of Thetford Priory in Norfolk.
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when the doors were closed, the bells fell silent and the religious life of the house came to an end, something remained among the stones: the memory of those who continued to open the door to the vulnerable, the hungry and the forgotten.
Blending history, fiction and quiet supernatural mystery, this novel follows monks, women, families and townspeople shaped by the loss of a place that had been more than stone. It had been shelter, prayer, food, sound and belonging.
As the centuries pass, names begin to fade, but the legend takes its shape: a woman in grey, an old monk with keys, chanting among the ruins, and the feeling that some doors never fully close.
