The Garden of the Sun is a novel written by Thomas J. Powers. The story takes place in the late 1800s in California, where a wealthy landowner, John Sutter, is trying to create a utopian society in the midst of the gold rush. Sutter hires a young artist, Richard Duvall, to design and build a garden that will symbolize his vision of a perfect world. As Duvall works on the garden, he becomes involved in the lives of Sutter's family and the other residents of the community. He falls in love with Sutter's daughter, but their relationship is complicated by the social and economic divisions within the community. Meanwhile, a group of Chinese immigrants who are working on the railroad project nearby are also trying to create a better life for themselves.
