At 16 Matt Feargal dreamed of little else but escaping his mother, her alcoholism, the incessant raiding of his stash, and the narrow confines of Dilmun. There was little enough to hold him beyond the distractions of petty crime, the ganja he grew in a nearby wood, and a girlfriend more interested in the weed than him. One ray of sunshine-a chance encounter with Jonah Salt living just north of his grow. Salt, the kid believed, had a plan that would net Feargal enough to put Dilmun behind him. In a cafe, however, a woman wanted a spliff-and life was looking up. But... At first the signs were small and easily dismissed-the light was off, the shadow wasn't really a lope; the river broke not quite right in the moonlight, all just magical thinking. Of course there was the fox in The Wood-but that had to have been rabid. On top of all the signs and wonders there was, perhaps, the return of Zakara Botrous-his father. With this followed the rumours brought from Eastern Mexico and the Cinn-a great and continuous malignity.
