English summary: This book is the inseparable companion of La Maladie de l'ame. Its aim is to present as clearly as possible what would - for centuries - serve as guidelines which influenced the way physicians approached madness. Here, translated and annotated, readers will find not only the founding texts of ancient medicine, but also an inevitable component for any thoughtful discussion of madness: the issue of phantasia, reassessed during the Hellenistic era, and that of the treatment which inevitably called for an analysis of the Aristotelian catharsis.
French description: Ce livre est le compagnon inseparable de La Maladie de l'ame. Il a une finalite: donner, de maniere la plus claire possible, ce qui va etre pour des siecles l'outillage de la reflexion des medecins sur la folie. L'histoire de la medecine est, pour une grande part, jusqu'a une periode assez proche, une histoire des textes et de leur interpretation dans laquelle philologie et medecine collaborent. Le sens de manie est delicat. C'est le terme le plus general pour indiquer la folie. Mais, au cours du temps, la manie est devenue une maladie bien definie dans l'usage medical: de telle sorte qu'il faut toujours prendre garde au contexte et a l'epoque ou l'on se trouve. Parfois le sens large et le sens technique peuvent coexister. L'auteur pense deja a Philippe Pinel, le fondateur, au tout debut du XIXe siecle, de ce qui s'appellera la psychiatrie. On trouvera traduits et analyses les textes fondateurs de la medecine antique, mais aussi, accompagnant inevitablement la reflexion sur la folie, la question de la phantasia, renouvelee a l'epoque hellenistique, et celle du traitement qui ne pouvait eviter un examen de la catharsis aristotelicienne.Jacques Pigeaud (1937) est professeur emerite de litterature latine a l'Universite de Nantes et membre de l'Institut universitaire de France. On lui doit egalement aux Belles Lettres, La Maladie de l'ame. Etude sur la relation de l'ame et du corps dans la tradition medico-philosophique antique.
