Faye is a very lonely little girl. She copes with this loneliness through an imaginary friend named Wisp. Wisp is Faye's inner voice. This inner voice represents the second self within all of us - the one that criticizes us and causes us to carry manys anxieties. When Faye speaks to Wisp out loud at school, she becomes the subject of ridicule and is ostracized.

Unexpectedly, a new boy moves into the neighborhood and befriends Faye, which surprises both Faye and Wisp. Influenced bu Wisp's insistence, Faye initially tries to push the boy away. However, the boy refuses to give up and strives to help Faye climb out of the emotional well she has fallen into.
