Dive into a magical underwater adventure with Darya, a courageous girl gifted with a rare power: she can communicate with marine animals. When her friend Cleo the clownfish-who leads a cast of colourful sea creatures-tells her about a strange THING in the ocean, the marine world is thrown into confusion. One by one, the befuddled sea creatures offer their whimsical guesses: Tide the wise turtle thinks it's a shipwreck; Syrah the seahorse imagines it's a sleeping giant; a spiky lionfish suspects it's a sea monster.
Each creature is lovingly introduced with a special trait that makes it unique, helping children learn about ocean animals while building empathy and wonder. But the truth is more alarming than they could have imagined-it's a pile of trash, something they've never seen before because it doesn't belong in their world.
Mystery in the Blue, Blue Sea is designed to spark curiosity and compassion in young readers while gently introducing themes of environmental stewardship. Its metaphorical prose and vibrant, nature-rich setting make it ideal for read-aloud sessions at home or in the classroom. The story concludes with a hopeful message and reflection questions to empower children to become ocean heroes by taking simple, meaningful steps to protect the planet.
This manuscript was inspired by our love of the ocean and our desire to preserve its beauty. It has been shared with authentic elementary and secondary school audiences, and student and teacher feedback has been thoughtfully incorporated throughout the writing process. (The idea of the mysterious 'THING' came from a Grade 6 student!)
The book is endorsed by world-renowned illustrator Ben Heine and acclaimed theatre writer, actor, and producer Suzanne Lebeau, adding both creative and critical credibility.
