The Fucking Audacity of Me by Lola Valdés is a raw, funny and unapologetically sweary memoir about manifestation, motherhood, heartbreak, ambition and rebuilding a life when absolutely nothing goes according to plan.
Growing up on a council estate and leaving school with zero GCSEs, Lola wasn't exactly handed the traditional blueprint for success. After infertility threatened one of the things she wanted most, she challenged a decision denying her NHS-funded IVF, won the funding and finally became a mother. But getting the life she'd spent years visualising didn't mean everything suddenly became perfect.
Motherhood brought overwhelming love alongside a difficult birth recovery, postnatal depression and an intense fear of losing the baby she'd fought so hard to have. Then, just months after becoming a mother, her marriage collapsed.
What followed was a period of betrayal, single motherhood, financial pressure, career transformation and learning that sometimes the life falling apart is also the life forcing you to become someone new.
Through manifestation, gratitude, visualisation, EFT, uncomfortable self-reflection and - most importantly - taking actual fucking action, Lola begins creating a life she once wouldn't have believed belonged to her.
Her career accelerates. Her confidence grows. Her relationship with money changes. She learns to maintain boundaries, stop shrinking herself to make other people comfortable and recognise that being labelled too much, difficult or even obstructive doesn't necessarily mean she needs to become less.
And then there's love again.
Including a competitive strongman, questionable social-media behaviour and the realisation that apparently manifesting a masculine man can result in the universe taking the request very fucking literally.
But this isn't a book claiming that positive thoughts magically prevent terrible things from happening.
It's about what happens when you start believing you have some agency over what happens next.
Alongside the painful parts are stories about dating, family, sex, work, money, motherhood, selling pictures of feet in the name of multiple income streams, being HR's fucking nightmare and the ridiculous everyday moments that make rebuilding a life worth it.
At its heart, The Fucking Audacity of Me is about a woman who spent years asking whether she was good enough, capable enough or deserving enough - and eventually started asking a completely different question:
Why the fuck not me?
It's not a fairytale.
It's her receipts.
