The copper in a wire was not made on Earth. The iron in a bridge was not made on Earth. The gold in a ring was not made on Earth. Almost all naturally occurring metal atoms were finished long before Earth existed.
They were made in stars.
Some were made in the quiet center of an old star. Some were made in a few seconds during a huge explosion. Some may have been made when two dead stars crashed into each other.
Even then the story was not finished. Earth melted. Heavy metals sank. Other metals stayed near the top. Hot rock and hot water moved them around. Rain and rivers moved them again. In a few rare places, one metal became crowded together in one spot.
Only in those rare places can we mine it.
This book follows that whole journey, from the Big Bang to the phone in your pocket.
About this edition. This is a simple English edition. It is written for readers who are meeting this science for the first time. You do not need any chemistry. You do not need any geology. You do not need any mathematics. Every hard word is explained in ordinary language on the page where it first appears.
This book grew out of a longer, more technical manuscript on the transition metals. That fuller treatment is a separate work; this edition stands complete on its own. The science has not been made softer. Only the words have. Where scientists are still arguing, this book says so. Where the answer is well proven, this book says that too. Learning the difference between those two things is part of learning science.
