In From Gnosiology to Waḥdat al-Shuhūd, Kamaruzzaman Bustamam-Ahmad-anthropologist and lifelong student of the Sufi tradition-takes up the oldest question of the spiritual life: can the knowledge of God (maʿrifah) truly be called knowledge? Moving from the science of gnosis to the summit of Sufi metaphysics, he charts the soul's ascent from knowing about the Divine to witnessing it.
At its heart lies a distinction that has divided mystics for centuries-between waḥdat al-wujūd, the oneness of being and its intoxicated cry, I am the Real, and waḥdat al-shuhūd, the oneness of witnessing, in which the seeker beholds nothing anywhere but God, yet remains, to the last breath, a servant. The drop does not become the ocean; the mirror does not become the light-and still it reflects nothing else.
Part reflection, part testimony, this is a contemplative journey through the anthropology of mystical knowing in Islam: the human being as a vessel of knowledge; the heart as the organ of witnessing; and the long discipline of intuition, symbol, meaning, and taʾwīl-the unveiling of the veiled (kashf al-maḥjūb).
