From A Russian Diary, 1917-1920 is a memoir written by an Englishwoman named Louise Bryant. The book is a personal account of her experiences living in Russia during the tumultuous years following the Russian Revolution. Bryant was a journalist and writer who had traveled to Russia with her husband, the American journalist John Reed, in 1917. The couple were supporters of the Bolsheviks and were sympathetic to the revolutionary cause. The book is divided into three parts, each covering a different period of time. The first part covers the period from March to October 1917, when the Provisional Government was in power and the Bolsheviks were organizing for the October Revolution. Bryant describes the mood of the country during this time and the growing support for the Bolsheviks. The second part of the book covers the period from October 1917 to July 1918, when the Bolsheviks were consolidating their power and fighting off counter-revolutionary forces. Bryant describes the chaos and violence of this period, as well as the efforts of the Bolsheviks to establish a new social order. The third part of the book covers the period from July 1918 to 1920, when the Bolsheviks were engaged in a civil war against anti-Bolshevik forces. Bryant describes the horrors of the war, including famine, disease, and political repression. She also discusses the role of foreign intervention in the conflict.Throughout the book, Bryant provides a personal perspective on the events she witnessed. She describes her interactions with Bolshevik leaders such as Lenin and Trotsky, as well as her experiences living among ordinary Russians. The book provides a vivid and intimate portrait of a country in the throes of revolution and civil war. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
