Froissart: Chronicler and Poet is an insightful study of the life and literary contributions of Jean Froissart, one of the most significant figures in fourteenth-century literature and historiography. This work by F. S. Shears explores the fascinating duality of a man who was both a dedicated recorder of historical events and a refined practitioner of courtly poetry. Froissart's legacy is most famously preserved in his Chronicles, which remain a vital primary source for understanding the chivalry, warfare, and political shifts of the Hundred Years' War.
The text examines how Froissart's travels and his proximity to the leading noble houses of Europe informed his narrative style and historical perspective. By analyzing his poetic works alongside his historical accounts, Shears provides a holistic view of Froissart's artistry and his role in shaping the cultural memory of the Middle Ages. This book is an essential resource for students of medieval history and French literature, offering a detailed look at the evolution of historical writing and the vibrant social landscape of the late medieval period. It underscores the enduring value of Froissart's ability to weave the pageantry of knightly deeds into a lasting literary tapestry.
