Gabe Bergeron had been invited to dine at a restaurant renown across the width and breadth of Philadelphia for its fusion cuisine. Someone, let's call him Reggie Broussard, had thought it was a splendid idea to fuse Filipino and Cajun cooking.
Gabe was looking at the result. And smelling it. He wasn't given to snap judgments, but he had hated the whole concept as soon as he'd crossed the threshold and been assaulted olfactorily. The lumps masquerading as potatoes were definitely not potatoes, and the sauce was purple.
He smiled his very best smile at his boss, Jennifer Garst-Boltukaev, who had invited him to Reggie's to celebrate the elevation of Carla Wong-Baldacci to the lofty rank of full partner in Garst Accounting. But Carla and her husband, Harry, hadn't been able to attend. For some reason?
And Ms. Leah Broussard, the manager of Reggie's, had given Gabe the evil eye. For some reason? Gabe was sure that he'd never seen the tall, dark woman before, but there was something about the glare that was all too familiar.
Was the glare because he'd innocently happened upon her meeting with one Lachlan Moncrieffe? Not making a snap judgments again, Lachlan was handsome and charming, and his snake oil was probably the finest on the market, and it appeared that Leah was buying.
But it wasn't any of Gabe Bergeron's business, and in the normal course of events, he would never have seen Leah or Lachlan or Reggie's fusion restaurant ever again. Or smelled it.
But events swerved into a Gabe-normal course when Lachlan was mugged outside the restaurant and a briefcase ripped from his pampered hands. A briefcase that he kept insisting contained nothing of value while sporting a shattered look on his face.
And then Detective Vonda Golczewski arrived. Gabe liked Vonda, and he was almost certain that she liked him. Howsomever, Vonda was a very private person, and Gabe had never been privy to any details of her personal life. He knew she had a husband and daughter, but contact with them was expressly forbidden.
So it was with some trepidation that he noted that Leah Broussard and Vonda Golczewski were tall and slender with elliptical faces and great dark eyes that could glare at an innocent person for no reason at all.He'd tried to tell Vonda that he'd had no idea that Reggie's Restaurant was managed by her mother. The funny thing was that Vonda was so upset about her mother and her relationship with Lachlan Moncrieffe that his trespass on forbidden territory was barely noted. Funny odd, not funny ha-ha.
