Born into a large share-cropping family in the rural South, the author went from being a child laborer in the cotton fields, forced to drop out of school, to eventually becoming a consultant at the college where she is working on her doctorate. But of those early days in the 1940s and 1950s, the author vividly depicts the life of a young Black woman in the South, when as she says, You wouldn't have known that slavery had ended.
