The story of Elizabeth Tootle is one of resilience and of having the courage to demand justice against seemingly overwhelming odds. Born free in 1757, Elizabeth was illegally sold into slavery and spent a lifetime fighting her way to freedom during a time when her country was ironically struggling for its own independence. For more than 250 years, Tootle was left behind by history. Here, her reconstructed story gives perspective into the divide between a new republic and the enslaved 20 percent of its population.
This book documents the true story of Elizabeth Tootle's quest for liberty in a country that was conflicted over whether freedom should apply to everyone. Piecing together her life story through state archives, court records, local historians, original writings, and more, these chapters chronologically trace Elizabeth's resistance to racial oppression against the backdrop of an emerging nation.
