After its nobility collapsed at the end of the 18th century, the city passed into foreign hands (Austria and France) before being annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. The history of the 19th and 20th centuries was no less turbulent and Venice has been striving to avert the dangers associated with water and depopulation, while tourism (10 million visitors annually), has proved inadequate to constitute the sole solution to its current problems.
