Presque toutes les introductions à la doctrine chrétienne sont écrites depuis l'intérieur d'une seule tradition. C'est une façon parfaitement honnête d'écrire un livre, mais elle laisse un lecteur de côté celui qui veut comprendre l'ensemble de la conversation avant de décider où il se situe.
Ce livre présente six traditions côte à côte: catholique, luthérienne, réformée, baptiste, méthodiste ou wesleyenne, et pentecôtiste. Chaque doctrine est exposée pour les six, dans des tableaux comparatifs lisibles, afin de voir d'un coup d'oeil ce qui fait accord et ce qui ne le fait pas.
Et il tient une promesse: chaque position est présentée sous sa forme la plus forte, dans les termes qu'emploieraient ses propres défenseurs, avec les passages bibliques auxquels ils font eux-mêmes appel. Ce livre ne vous dit pas qui a raison. Il ne le suggère pas non plus par le ton, l'ordre ou la place accordée à chaque thèse.

À ceux qui viennent à la foi et veulent la carte entière. Aux croyants de longue date à qui l'autre position n'a jamais été présentée avec équité. Aux groupes de maison et aux cours pour adultes. Aux étudiants en théologie qui cherchent une vue d'ensemble avant les cours spécialisés. Et à quiconque a reçu la caricature d'une thèse en soupçonnant qu'il y avait autre chose.
Ce qui le distingueLa plupart des livres pour débutants enseignent une position. Celui-ci enseigne une compétence: reconnaître un argument théologique lorsqu'on le rencontre, le restituer avec équité et comprendre ce qui est réellement en jeu. Plusieurs exercices demandent délibérément d'exposer une thèse que l'on ne partage pas, car savoir formuler une position dans des termes que ses tenants accepteraient est l'épreuve qui montre qu'on l'a comprise.
