Le Siège De Calais is a classic French tragedy by Pierre-Laurent Buyrette de Belloy, first performed in 1765. This edition presents the complete play, followed by historical notes that provide context and enrich the reader's understanding of the events depicted.
The play dramatizes the siege of Calais by Edward III of England in 1346, during the Hundred Years' War. Belloy's work explores themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and honor through the plight of the besieged citizens. Known for its emotional intensity and dramatic flair, Le Siège De Calais was a significant success in its time and remains an important example of French neoclassical tragedy. This edition is a valuable resource for students and enthusiasts of French literature and history.
