Le Roman de la Rose is a medieval French allegorical poem. Written in two stages, the first part was begun by Guillaume de Lorris circa 1230, and was completed by Jean de Meun circa 1275-1280. It is notable as an example of courtly literature, and it offers insights into the courtly love tradition, philosophical discourse, and the social structures of the medieval period.
Guillaume de Lorris's contribution describes the protagonist's quest for a rosebud in a walled garden, employing allegorical figures such as Love, Wealth, and Jealousy. Jean de Meun's continuation diverges significantly, introducing lengthy digressions on topics ranging from philosophy and science to social satire. His work transforms the narrative into a broader exploration of human nature, morality, and the complexities of love.
