Este livro procura examinar a representação da santidade feminina no contexto da Roma da Contra-Reforma. O período de tempo em que centrei os meus estudos foi de 1588 a 1625: 1588 marcou a primeira canonização pós-tridentina, bem como a formação da Congregação de Ritos e Cerimónias por Sisto V; 1625 marcou o primeiro dos decretos de Urbano VIII que formaram o longo, judicial e centralizado processo de santificação que, no essencial, ainda hoje está em vigor. As únicas mulheres canonizadas durante este período foram Santa Francisca Romana em 1608, Santa Teresa de Ávila em 1622 e Isabel de Portugal em 1625. Examino estas três novas santas através de textos e gravuras relacionados com a sua canonização em Roma e avalio o modo como estas mulheres actuam como representantes da Igreja da Contra-Reforma. Para contextualizar adequadamente a história das canonizações destas mulheres, analiso os patronos das suas cerimónias de canonização, as estruturas temporárias erguidas no interior da Basílica de São Pedro para os eventos e, finalmente, a campanha contemporânea para a canonização de Ludovica Albertoni que, embora beatificada em 1671, acabou por não conseguir alcançar a santidade oficial.
