L histoire tourne autour de la famille de monsieur Salvador, un homme a la retraite au temperament rigide, intolerant et marque par de profonds prejuges. Sa stabilite familiale vole en eclats lorsque son fils aine, Abner, un architecte brillant et calme de trente-cinq ans, decide d assumer son homosexualite et son projet de vie commune avec son compagnon, Davi. Cette revelation declenche une violente colere chez Salvador, qui agresse son fils verbalement et physiquement, le poussant a quitter le domicile familial. Les drames se multiplient rapidement pour les deux soeurs d Abner: Rubia, la cadette, tombe enceinte de son directeur de travail, Geferson, un homme marie qui exige lâchement un avortement et la fait licencier, tandis que Simone, l autre soeur, decouvre durant sa grossesse que son enfant est atteint du syndrome de Patau, une malformation genetique irreversible et mortelle. Face a cette epreuve, son epoux Samuel l abandonne pour se refugier dans les bras d une maîtresse.
Au milieu de ces profondes douleurs terrestres surgit la famille de Davi. Sa mere, Janaina, une fervente spirite, et son frere cadet, Cristiano, un dentiste profondement traumatise par un accident de voiture ou sa fiancee Vitoria a trouve la mort, apportent a Rubia et Simone un soutien inestimable. Cristiano, inspire par le courage de Simone, parvient a vaincre sa propre depression et ses crises de panique en retournant soigner les patients, a commencer par Salvador lui-meme lors d une urgence dentaire. A travers des dialogues eclairants, Cristiano enseigne au pere d Abner l essence de l amour du prochain, de la tolerance et des lois de l evolution de l âme, initiant ainsi une spectaculaire transformation morale chez le vieil homme.
Le roman atteint son sommet spirituel a travers les lois de la reification et de la compensation karmique. Le petit Pedro, le fils malforme de Simone, ne vit que trois mois, mais sa breve existence permet de racheter des fautes commises au Moyen Âge, epoque ou il avait condamne Cristiano et Samuel aux tortures de l Inquisition sous le pretexte de sorcellerie. L amour inconditionnel de sa mere Simone et le devouement de Cristiano permettent a Pedro de trouver enfin la paix et de se reconstruire dans le monde spirituel, tandis que l esprit repenti de Vitoria, guidee par son frere desincarne Vanilson, accepte ses propres erreurs et s eleve vers une colonie superieure. Apres le depart de Pedro, Simone et Cristiano s unissent et attendent un nouvel enfant en parfaite sante, alors que Rubia trouve la stabilite et l amour aux cotes de Ricardo. Dans un final emouvant, monsieur Salvador embrasse enfin son gendre Davi et son fils Abner, prouvant que la tolerance et la charite pure triomphent toujours des tenebres de l ignorance.
