En 1893, les étudiants des Quatr'z Arts déclarent aux juges la guerre du nu. Dans les années 1960, les nudistes et les femmes en monokini provoquent des controverses passionnées. Chaque fois les mêmes questions se posent: où finit le public et où commence le privé? Que peut-on montrer, que doit-on cacher?
A travers une enquête qui mêle le droit, l'architecture, la littérature et la psychiatrie, Marcela Iacub raconte l'histoire de la pudeur publique. On y découvre comment le droit a longtemps partagé le monde visible entre licite et illicite, substituant à l'espace réel un espace institutionnel et politique.
Aujourd'hui, ce vieux mot de pudeur a disparu de nos codes pour être remplacé par celui de Sexe. Mais, loin de faire le récit épique d'une liberté durement conquise, Marcela Iacub analyse les transformations des techniques par lesquelles l'Etat s'est donné notre sexualité en spectacle au cours des deux derniers siècles, et a conditionné nos espaces, nos vêtements, nos pratiques et même certaines de nos maladies mentales. Elle invite ainsi à une histoire politique du regard.
