This is the first ever edition of nine fictional writings by the French painter Odilon Redon (1840-1916). The text has been established from a transcription made by André Mellerio, which is currently housed at the Art Institute of Chicago (the original manuscript being unavailable).

Odilon Redon remains one of the central figures in nineteenth-century Word and Image studies. His book À soi-même constitutes a landmark in nineteenth-century autobiographical writing. While the literary aspect of Redon's work has been the focus of a body of criticism, the existence of a series of fictional writings by the painter has been overlooked. This edition seeks to contextualise Redon's texts within his oeuvre as well as in relation to the artistic developments in nineteenth-century France.
