The months he spends there are to transform him. He is appointed to the job to replace Captain Richard who is deemed too weak by the German authorities. He is to prove implacable and violent - whipping inmates and treating them more cruelly than common law prisoners. He is even reprimanded by a Gestapo officer. He imposes inhuman regulations, specially after the round-up of the 16th July which brings a great influx of women and children to the camp: he then limits access to the toilet to two people at a time through the night. In September 1942 he is relieved of his duties.
This book follows Captain Vieux's life before he takes the post, and after he leaves it, particularly the legal repercussions in 1947. It also traces the history of Drancy camp.
Didier Epelbaum played an editorial role for France 2 for a long time and now oversees teaching at the Science-Po school of political science. He has written several books about the Jewish people and genocide, in particular Aloïs Brunner: la haine irréductible (Calmann-Lévy); Les Enfants de papier: Les juifs de Pologne immigrés en France jusqu'en 1940 (Grasset); Pas un mot, pas une ligne?
