La Nouvelle Héloïse (1761), also known as Letters of Two Lovers, Inhabitants of a Small Town at the Foot of the Alps, is an epistolary novel by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Published in 1761, it tells the story of a passionate love affair between Julie d'Étange, a young noblewoman, and her tutor, Saint-Preux, a commoner. Their love is forbidden by social conventions, leading to tragic consequences.
This Volume 1 presents the initial letters in which the deep and complex feelings between the protagonists are revealed. Rousseau's exploration of love, virtue, and social class resonated deeply with readers of his time, influencing the development of Romanticism. La Nouvelle Héloïse remains a significant work of French literature, offering insights into the complexities of human relationships and the societal constraints of the 18th century.
