C'est durant la postproduction de 2OO1, l'Odyssée de l'espace que Stanley Kubrick commence à préparer son nouveau projet, une biographie filmée de Napoléon Bonaparte. L'ascension et la chute de l'empereur français sont dotées de qualités dramaturgiques indéniables, mais c'est son cerveau qui intéresse le plus Kubrick, qui ne parvient pas à comprendre comment un esprit aussi brillant a pu succomber à ses propres tentations irrationnelles et à une fougue aux conséquences si dévastatrices.
Tandis qu'il travaille sur le script, Kubrick lit tous les livres qu'il peut se procurer sur Napoléon, consulte des historiens et rassemble le fruit de ses recherches dans une base de données pléthorique de plus de 30.000 illustrations et photos de repérage. Les costumes font l'objet de recherches et de croquis, comme les uniformes en papier, destinés à alléger le budget. Pourtant, à quelques semaines du début du tournage, la M.G.M. puis United Artists se retirent, arguant que la production de sagas historiques est trop téméraire par les temps qui courent et que le coût du film constitue un risque trop important. Ils le regrettent sûrement aujourd'hui.
La curiosité de Kubrick à l'égard de Napoléon perdura jusqu'à la fin de sa vie, mais le budget requis pour faire le film de ses rêves resta totalement irréaliste. S'il avait vécu assez longtemps pour que les milliers de soldats et de chevaux qu'il imaginait s'affronter lors d'épiques scènes de bataille puissent être dessinés par ordinateur, peut-être aurait-il fini par réaliser son Napoléon. Peut-être ce film là aurait-il été son plus grand.
L'édition limitée publiée par TASCHEN en 2009 était composée de 10 livres -- script, références, notes, correspondance, chronologie, production, textes, costumes, repérages et dossier iconographique -- rassemblés dans un livre-coffret. Cette réédition réunit tous les éléments originaux dans un volume unique incluant le fac-similé du scénario complet rédigé par Kubrick. Les quelque 800 pages richement illustrées de cet ouvrage renferment mille indices sur les méthodes, les idées, les motivations, questionnements, intentions et obsessions de Kubrick, tout ce que vous vouliez savoir sur ce projet, et plus encore.
