L'année 1856 marque un tournant décisif dans l'histoire navale: la guerre de Crimée révèle la vulnérabilité des bâtiments en bois face aux nouvelles armes, notamment les projectiles explosifs. Ce constat d'obsolescence provoque une dynamique d'innovation majeure dans l'ingénierie navale française. À la tête de ce renouveau, l'ingénieur Stanislas Charles Henri Dupuy de Lôme initie une transformation radicale des conceptions en vigueur, tant sur le plan de la construction que de la protection des unités de combat.
Ce travail examine le contexte technologique, politique et stratégique ayant favorisé l'émergence de ces nouveaux monstres de fer sillonnant les mers. Il analyse de manière comparative les différents types de cuirassés développés, en mettant en lumière les étapes de leur perfectionnement, jusqu'à l'établissement d'un modèle de référence qui influencera durablement les marines de guerre à l'échelle mondiale.
