La mosaïque, art développé par les Grecs, particulièrement à la cour des rois de Macédoine, n'était pas connue des Égyptiens. Des mosaïstes macédoniens créèrent des ateliers fort actifs dans la capitale comme dans les nouvelles villes de l'Égypte grecque. Stimulés par la demande de la cour, ces ateliers firent preuve d'innovation. Après les galets, ils utilisèrent des tesselles de diverses tailles et adoptèrent de nouveaux matériaux (verre, faïence, peinture) pour transposer au sol les réalisations de la grande peinture, l'art majeur de l'époque, caractérisé par une vive polychromie. Les mosaïstes alexandrins furent à l'avant-garde de la création à l'époque hellénistique, et leur influence s'étendit autour de la Méditerranée. Après la conquête romaine, s'adaptant aux goûts de leurs commanditaires comme à l'évolution architecturale, ils surent garder une place importante dans cet art qui se développa dans tout l'Empire, à Rome, en Occident comme en Orient. L'ouvrage présente un choix de 70 mosaïques et pavements d'Alexandrie et de l'Égypte gréco-romaine. Largement méconnus quand ils ne sont pas inédits, ces documents sont ici illustrés en couleur, souvent pour la première fois. Première synthèse sur les mosaïques et les pavements d'Égypte réalisés entre la fin du IVe siècle avant J.-C. et le VIe siècle après J.-C., cette étude vise à faire mieux connaître la production artistique comme artisanale d'un type de décor qui jouait un rôle important dans le cadre de vie des Anciens.
