English description: To illuminate the human being by awakening the divine faculties dormant within matter-such was the aim pursued by Martines de Pasqually, in the words of Papus.
Secret order, initiatory rituals, awakening of the inner being: in the eighteenth century, Martines de Pasqually laid the foundations of a major spiritual tradition within Western esotericism. His deeply spiritual and initiatory doctrine remains obscure to the uninitiated, even to those versed in ordinary philosophy.
Drawing on rare documents, notably from the personal archives of J.-B. Willermoz, Papus published this major study in 1895 to shed light on the life and work of Martines de Pasqually: a central figure of Illuminism in France, initiator of Claude de Saint-Martin-the Unknown Philosopher-and founder of the Rite of the Élus Coëns.
The volume is further enriched by the initiatory catechisms of the Élus Coëns, from the apprentice grade to the highest degrees-documents of exceptional importance for the history of Western esotericism, Martinism, and theurgical tradition.
