Ce livre comporte la suite de deux récits concernant la Guerre d'Algérie.
1er récit: La bataille de Timimoun opposa, de novembre à décembre 1957, les troupes du Front de libération Nationale et celles de l'armée française, principalement le 3e Régiment de paracutistes coloniaux sous les ordres du liedutenant-colonel Marcel Bigeard. Vers Timimoun, au mois d'octobre 1957, des goumiers désertent après avoir massacré leurs cadres européens. Les déserteurs rejoignent une unité de l'Armée de Libération Nationale. Le 8 novembre 1957, un convoi et son escorte de légionnaires sont attaqués. Le 21 novembre, les rebelles sont localisés et encerclés dans le désert du Tademaït par le 3ème RPC. Le sergent-chef René Sentenac est blessé à mort au cours de l'opération Timimoun I, lors du premier accrochage le 21 novembre 1957. Son agonie est alors immortalisée par le photographe Marc Flament. Près de lui, le lieutenant Pierre Roher commandant la section appelle les secours. Le lieutenant est tué à son tour peu après ainsi que l'infirmier Roland Fialon par un sniper ennemi embusqué à 400 mètres au nord de leur position[
2e Récit: La bataille des Frontières est l'ensemble des opérations militaires menées principalement sur la Frontière algéro-tunisienne, du 21 janvier au 28 mai 1958, par les Unités parachutistes de l'armée française contre les tentatives de franchissement en force du barrage de la ligne Morice par les combattants algériens de l'ALN, la branche armée du FLN, stationnés, armés et entraînés en Tunisie
Le théâtre d'opérations principal est défini par les couloirs de pénétration à partir du Bec de canard dessiné autour de Ghardimaou, de part et d'autre des monts de la Medjerda, vers Souk-Ahras (Marché des lions) et Guelma. Les forces engagées par l'ALN à partir de sa base de l'Est, représentent la valeur de trois bataillons composés chacun de trois katibas de 250 à 300 hommes. Dans la première bataille de Souk-Ahras, de février 1958, ces unités affrontent l'équivalent de cinq régiments de parachutistes, dont le 1er Régiment étranger de parachutistes sans compter les unités de secteur et les troupes assurant la sécurité xde la ligne électrifiée, étendue sur 700 km, et jouant leur rôle d'avertisseur à chaque tentative de franchissement.
Le16 février 1958, la nouvelle organisation porte ses fruits. Les parachutistes aidés par le 18e Régiment de Dragons rattrapent deux katibas qui avaient franchi le barrage. Ils mettent hors combat 200 combattants, tués ou faits prisonniers, et récupèrent un important stock d'armes. Les 25-26 février, puis le 4 mars, d'autres katibas sont décimées dans les mêmes conditions.
Après un passage en force, le18 mars, plus au nord, vers Mondovi, une forte katiba venue de Tunisie et étrillée (113 tués) par onze compagnies héliportées, un autre échec, cette fois-ci d'Ouest en Est, a lieu à la même date par la katiba locale de la région de Souk-Ahras qui tente de se réfugier en Tunisie. À moitié détruite, elle est finalement interceptée. Du 28 avril au 3 mai plus de mille combattants se lancent dans une nouvelle phase offensive pour tenter de faire passer deux katibas à destination des wilayas I et II et une unité de transmissions destinée à la wilaya I. C'est un des paroxysmes de la guerre d'Algérie que cette seconde bataille de Souk Ahras dont l'essentiel se déroule dans le djebel d'EI-Mouadjène, allant jusqu'au corps à corps. Seul le tiers de la katiba d'acheminement de la wilaya III réussit à percer pour rejoindre, après une odyssée de 700 km, le coeur de la Kabylie. En mai 1958, les forces françaises déciment encore plusieurs centaines de combattants. C'est au cours de la poursuite d'une bande infiltrée que le lieutenant-colonel Jeanpierre, chef de corps du1er REP, trouve la mort, au sud-ouest de Guelma, le 29 mai 1958
