Il s'est agi de lutter contre la manipulation mentale que feraient subir ces groupes à leurs adeptes, les privant de tout libre arbitre. L'Etat, qui s'est fait le relais de ce combat initié par des groupes de victimes et de proches de victimes, a donc cherché à qualifier juridiquement la manipulation mentale.
Dans les années 2000, cette lutte a abouti à la création d'un délit pénal punissant la sujétion psychologique. Mais comment peut-on qualifier une situation de manipulation mentale ? Qui peut l'expertiser ? Cette sujétion psychologique est-elle réservée aux sectes ou s'applique-t-elle dans d'autres situations ? Et agir par le droit a-t-il permis de faire disparaître ou de réduire les manipulations mentales ?
Arnaud Esquerre a mené l'enquête pendant plusieurs années auprès de toutes les parties concernées: victimes, proches des victimes, membres de sectes, représentants de l'Etat, juges, etc. Il raconte en sociologue comment la France a inventé le délit de sujétion psychologique . Il montre ses implications pour nous tous: ces combats contre la manipulation mentale sont autant d'agencements à travers lesquels l'Etat exerce un pouvoir sur le psychisme des êtres humains. Un pouvoir particulièrement inquiétant parce qu'il laisse à ceux qui en ont la maîtrise une marge d'arbitraire très grande.
Arnaud Esquerre est sociologue, rattaché au groupe de sociologie politique et morale (GSPM) à l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, et il a enseigné à Sciences Po Paris de 2005 à 2008.
