- Morphologie et proportions : serpents longs, très minces et exceptionnellement agiles, avec une tête distincte placée sur un cou relativement long; le corps est cylindrique plutôt que comprimé latéralement, et la queue est proportionnellement longue.
- Écaillage et texture : écailles dorsales lisses et brillantes qui facilitent un déplacement silencieux et à faible friction à travers la végétation; les plaques céphaliques sont bien définies; les pupilles sont rondes.
- Dentition : crocs antérieurs fixes de longueur modérée par rapport à la taille du crâne; petites dents maxillaires supplémentaires en arrière des crocs.
- Profil du venin : mélanges principalement neurotoxiques riches en toxines à trois doigts et en composants apparentés qui perturbent rapidement la transmission neuromusculaire; les tableaux cliniques de l'envenimation sont dominés par une paralysie progressive.
