Pierre Potier is one of the most famous researchers of the French and international scientific community. Awarded the CNRS médaille d'or* in 1998, President of La Maison de la Chimie* and L'Institut de chimie et des substances naturelles*, he is widely recognised for his outstanding work on the development of two anti-tumor drugs.
The entire history of chemistry and medicine proves that nature is overflowing with molecules that can be used for their healing properties and that research has a long way to go before plants, animals and micro-organisms have revealed all their secrets. Traditional shamanic medicine helps in discovering these substances, but more systematic research could reveal even greater treasures. However, action must be taken fast since this generous bio-diversity is threatened by man himself.
In this remarkable book, the author defines both the regions of the world richest in bio-diversity and the most promising areas of research. We learn how an ethno-pharmacologist works, how deadly poison can be turned into precious medicine, and why traditional healers and shamans might be called the original chemists of our planet.
Potier's work also answers such important questions as: Is there an unlimited supply of goods in Nature's market ? Can anyone declare ownership of these molecules ? How can the countries where these molecules are found be indemnified ?
The phenomenal scientific - and economic - potential involved make this one of the most vital human endeavours of our time, whose outcome will ultimately affect all mankind.
*CNRS Gold Medal *The House of Chemistry *Institute of Chemistry and Natural substances Pierre Potier wrote this book in collaboration with François Chast, head of the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department of the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Paris and specialist in the history of medication.
