J. Krishnamurti n'a eu de cesse de réfléchir à la manière dont l'homme pouvait accéder à la vérité de la vie en se libérant de ses entraves que sont les idées préconçues, les traditions et les systèmes de pensée. Celui qui, toujours, refusa d'être perçu comme un penseur, un gourou ou un philosophe ne livre en aucun cas des solutions. Il ne prescrit pas de remèdes. La marche vers la liberté et la découverte de soi doit aboutir par chacun, et en chacun. Car, et c'est sans doute sa seule conviction énoncée comme telle: pour comprendre le réel, encore faut-il prendre connaissance de soi. Et pour se connaître soi-même, la première étape vers la libération consiste à s'échapper du carcan du conditionnement. Fuir le sempiternel rôle d'imitateur que s'est attribué l'homme et laisser jaillir l'état créatif. C'est cette libération de l'esprit statique, du connu, qui permettra à tout homme d'accéder au rang d'architecte d'une société nouvelle. Car le monde est fait par les hommes, et le mal qu'il exhibe n'est que le fruit pourri de leurs propres souffrances.
Le livre de la méditation et de la vie se découpe en douze parties, comme les douze mois de l'année. À chaque semaine son thème et chaque jour sa variation. Le tout tendant vers une progression. Ainsi, alors que les quatre semaines de janvier dispensent une réflexion sur la capacité à Écouter , Apprendre et faire fi de L'autorité pour tendre à La connaissance de soi , celles de décembre closent 365 jours de pensées par les questions de La solitude , La religion , Dieu et La méditation . On retrouve tous les thèmes chers au penseur et ces questions, répétées pour mieux nous guider vers la compréhension du moi pourquoi persistons-nous à vouloir nous connaître tels que nous désirons être et non tels que nous sommes ? pourquoi avons-nous peur de l'inconnu ? pourquoi l'attachement ? l'incertitude ? la soif de devenir ? On prend connaissance dans ce livre des acceptions qu'attribue Krishnamurti à certaines notions comme la passion, de sa volonté d'accession au point du libérateur Je ne sais pas , de son rejet de l'analyse. Enfin, au 365e jour, on lit ce que la méditation n'est pas: une respiration particulière, un salut au soleil. Car méditer, c'est purger l'esprit de toute activité égocentrique .
