The French today share many fears: fears for themselves, fears for their country, ancestral fears and fears of modernity, existential fears and fears related to the current economic situation... For centuries, all these fears were addressed by religion, then by science, which provided a framework of expression, gave them meaning and helped to allay them.
After the Second World War, the Welfare State and its protective figure, the hopes conveyed by political utopias and the reassuring figures of the 'fathers of the nation' helped to allay the concerns of the population.
All this is now a thing of the past. Politics is now a source of concern rather than comfort. This raises the question of how to regulate the diffuse and often irrational fears in society at a time when disillusionment and mistrust represent formidable threats to the proper functioning of democracy.
To answer this question, we conducted the first major French survey on fears, interviewing more than 3,000 people representative of the diversity of the French population on two occasions. It is on this solid basis that we present this first inventory of the fears of the French people. A. M. - P. P.
