Les Plaideurs (The Litigants) is a three-act comedy in verse by Jean Racine, first performed in 1668. It is the only comedy that Racine ever wrote. Inspired by Aristophanes' play The Wasps, it satirizes the obsession with litigation and the vagaries of the legal system.
Set in a provincial town, the play revolves around Dandin, an old judge consumed by his passion for presiding over cases, much to the dismay of his family. His son, Léandre, tries to cure him of this obsession, leading to a series of farcical situations and humorous encounters. The play features clever wordplay, lively characters, and a sharp critique of legal absurdities.
Les Plaideurs remains a classic of French theater, celebrated for its wit, elegance, and enduring relevance in its portrayal of human folly.
